Maroon dress: Shabby Apple // Booties: Similar pair with buckles and one without buckles. Theses are both under $70. // Scarf: I picked this up at Nordstrom during the Anniversary Sale, but sadly it's not available anymore. This navy and cream scarf or this black and white windowpane scarf are defintiely ones you'll wear through the fall and winter. // Purse: Kate Spade // Ear Jackets: Similar gold ones that also come in rose gold. // Lip color: Fresh Beauty in 'Tulip'
Going back to school shopping is one of the things I miss most about not being in school anymore. I loved organizing myself with new school supplies, picking out new treats for my lunches and getting to do some shopping after I cleaned out my closet. And after learning that a closet with just matching outfits doesn't get you very far and can be boring, I made sure that I opted for basic pieces instead. Though trends have come and gone through the years, these 5 neutral pieces are the ones that have always had a place in my closet.
1. Casual dresses
Whether you're wearing these to the office, coffee or on the weekends having a few dresses that you can throw on and go is so helpful. Neutral colored dresses allow you to mix and match to create different looks without anyone really noticing you're wearing the same dress. They're great for travel because they don't usually wrinkle and they're so easy to take from day to night.
Vests are perfect for when you need your arms free and when you don't want to keep taking a coat on and off. Whether you go for the puffer, fleece, draped or faux fur vest, if you find one that keeps you warm I'd definitely keep wearing it.
3. Long sleeve shirts
Going between the chilly fall air and the warm retreats you find indoors means that you have to layer. Whether you're wearing a denim jacket, coat, sweater or vest, you'll want a comfy layer underneath. White, black and stripes are always great options and ones that you'll wear all the time. Make sure that you have more then one so you don't have to do laundry as often or worry about discoloration.
For the days when you want to wear heels, but not high heels these are the perfect shoe. They're great for any occasion, especially when you have to be one your feet all day. To get the most out of these, make sure you pick booties in neutral colors and ones that don't have super trendy embellishments. Suede, tassels and buckles are details that will always be around.
5. Blanket scarves
I love blanket scarves because you can wear them so many different ways and because it's the only time where it's appropriate to wear a "blanket" in public. You can wear it as a wrap, belt it to make a vest or tie it in a million different ways. You can never go wrong with a classic plaid or a solid color, but don't be afraid to go a little less neutral with your scarves for some added personality.
