It's Friday and usually that calls for a happy dance, but to be honest it's a little bittersweet. I'll be heading home today after being able to spend a few weeks with my new nephew and the rest of my family. It's been so so so much fun and I'll definitely miss all the sweet baby cuddles, how little he is and getting to play with my other nephew. Sadly all good trips must come to an end, but I'm so blessed to have been able to spend this time up North and get just a small taste of fall.
One of the things I learned while I've been up North was how difficult it is sometimes to get dressed (and stay clean) when there's a new baby around. I've definitely relied on the less is more idea and these 5 wardrobe essentials I find myself reaching for all year year. Whether I'm running errands, working at home or going to a casual dinner, these are the perfect pieces.
1. White Shirt
Whether it's a sleeveless blouse, long sleeve top or tshirt, this is the quintessential piece for dressing up or down. Add a simple lariat necklace for the day or a classic statement necklace for a more dramatic evening look. You can pair it with denim shorts, black jeans or a midi skirt. You can layer it over a silk cami, wear it under a blazer or with a blanket scarf for a transitional look.
2. Straight leg jean
Girlfriend, boyfriend, high waisted, skinny...There are so many cuts and styles of jeans available now, but the one pair that won't ever go out of style is the straight leg jean. This jean in a medium wash with no tears or rips will get you the most wear. It has a tapered leg that hits right at the top of your foot and is perfect for wearing tucked into your boots, with your favorite mules or with sandals in the summer. Though there are certainly different jeans for different occasions, this is the pair that you can go to no matter what.
3. Nude heel
Even if you aren't a high heel person, there will probably be a time or two in life where you'll need to wear them. You can wear them with jeans, business slacks, skirts and of course any dress. A nude pair of heels will go with anything and won't go out of style. I personally prefer a patent leather, but a plain leather heel will be just as versatile.
4. Leopard clutch
I'm sure you've heard me say this before, but I'm a believe in leopard print as a neutral "color". Brown and black shades are perfect for any time of year and it's a print that isn't associated with a certain season. Leopard accessories like a clutch or scarf are always fun, loafers are always a classic but a cardigan or a blouse can also be fun ways to wear leopard as well.
5. Faux leather jacket
A classic black moto jacket for fall is a staple, but the same type of jacket in a cream or blush color is great for those breezy spring evenings or for standing out in a sea of black and gray during the winter. Gone are the days of when it was a faux pas to wear white after Labor Day...in fact winter whites are becoming more popular. Pair this jacket with your summer dresses to transition them into fall, wear it with a skirt and sneakers for an edgy and sporty weekend look or with a tailored black pant and velvet top for a luxe and sophisticated date night look.
