Keurig, French press, siphon or Italian style, I appreciate a freshly brewed cup of coffee (or two if I'm feeling crazy) in the morning. I can function without coffee, though it makes mornings slightly less enjoyable. Obviously as a coffee drinker, I've heard the good, the bad and the ugly about this controversial beverage, but at the end of the day it still seems like there are more benefits than drawbacks to drinking coffee. So for bit of light morning reading today, here are 5 fun facts I learned about coffee that should make you feel better about pouring yourself a cup of joe.
(PS I'm not a health care professional and am not making medical recommendations, I'm just sharing a few things I've learned about coffee.)
1. Most of the antioxidants Americans get is from drinking coffee.
Black coffee is packed with antioxidants and it's no surprise that since more than half of adults over 18 drink coffee, that most of the antioxidants come from coffee. It's also said that the antioxidants in coffee are more easily absorb by the human body than those found in fruits and vegetables.
2. The smell of coffee can make up feel less stressed.
A lack of sleep and coffee seem to go hand in hand. It's been found that the aroma of coffee can change the structure of brain proteins related to stress caused by sleep deprivation. So go ahead and take those few extra moments to savor the aroma before diving into your coffee in the morning.
3. Caffeine is a natural way to help increase physical performance.
Caffeine releases adrenaline into the bloodstream, which causes the fight or flight response. It tells the body to break down fat cells to be used as fuel for your body and increases you ability to perform physical tasks when working out. So feel good about drinking your coffee before hitting the gym.
4. Coffee might help you live longer.
Because coffee is packed with antioxidants and nutrients, it helps fight against diseases like diabetes, heart disease and Parkinson's. So the lower risk of disease could mean a healthier, happier life.
5. Coffee is great from your skin.
The antioxidants in coffee can help calm inflamed or red skin and the caffeine improves blood flow making your skin appear brighter. And once your down brewing your coffee, you can use the grounds as an exfoliant that's less irritating than traditional exfoliants.
One of the fun things about coffee is how much you can do with it. You can drink it plain and black or with flavors, different milks and toppings. It's just like fashion and can reflect any kind of feeling you want. Today I'm pairing my simple cup of coffee with this easily pulled together look. I've layered this slightly sheer polka dot blouse with a waterfall gray cardigan and these dark wash LOFT jeans. These are one of my favorite pairs because they're surprisingly comfortable and the dark wash makes them dressier. I finished off the look with this amazing, carry-all burgundy tote and a classic gold chain link bracelet. Now I'm feeling dressed, caffeinated and ready to conquer the rest of this week!
